"The Referee Plays to Be Insulted!": An Exploratory Qualitative Study on the Spanish Football Referees' Experiences of Aggression, Violence, and Copi…
2021
Referees are essential participants in the sport of football. They are responsible for enforcing the rules and achieving the necessary impartiality for the matches. Referees are often target of hostile reactions from fans, players, and coaches. However, few studies have focused on these experiences and the strategies they use to manage them. In order to fill this gap, a qualitative interview-based study was developed to explore the experiences of a group of football referees (four males and four females) on aggression, violence, and coping. A thematic analysis was developed combining inductive and deductive processes. Results indicated that the most frequent aggressions experienced were ver…

Not Only Slurs. A Pragma-rhetorical Approach to Verbal Abuse
2019
The topic of this paper is the complex phenomenon of verbal abuse. The aim is to show the productivity of a pragma-rhetorical approach in addressing this issue. Indeed, integrating modern pragmatics with classical rhetoric, this approach does not isolate words from social practices and therefore is not exclusively focused on slurs (as is the case in the current debate on this topic in the field of the philosophy of language) but it concerns verbal abuse in general. I argue that this wider approach, especially thanks to its focus on the intertwining of linguistic and social components, is more adapted to shedding light on the role that words play in performing violence. Particularly, I take …
Parole in duello. Riflessioni sulla violenza verbale
2013
Verbal violence is a complex phenomenon that language theory cannot ignore. This paper mainly aims to show that verbal assault and bodily harm are contiguous. The basic idea is that, in order to undersand this phenomenon, we need to consider language as strictly interwoven with other human activities. Using the Iliad as a paradigmatic case study, the paper focuses on two different types of conflict where words play an important role: the armed duel and the quarrel between Achilles and Agammenon.
Die Abwertung des Anderen mittels Sprache. Einflussfaktoren bei der Bewertung alltäglicher verbaler Gewalt im Amateurfußball
2020
International audience; The present study seeks to examine the underrepresented transnational phenomenon of everyday verbal abuse in amateur football. Based on 34 semi-structured interviews with German and French amateur referees, a contrastive sociolinguistic model was developed which allows to identify type-specific influencing factors on the evaluation of verbal abuse. Although individual referee related characteristics have similar values across different types, especially the high intrinsic motivation, active communication, the disturbing influence of third parties, and the identification of alleged perpetrator groups, the comparative analysis shows that personal ambition, knowledge of…
